Book Squirt

I is for Irwin

I was having trouble coming up with the letter I, so I looked at my podcasts to see if I had podcasted about a book whose author’s last name started with I.

I had! The author of the Maida series is Inez Haynes Irwin. You can listen to my podcast about Maida’s Little House here.

Maida’s Little House

I’ve always been fascinated by this book. When I was a little girl and first discovered it on our bookcases, I was intrigued by this little girl who brought her friends to a little house of their own. The way they split the chores made sense to me, and I loved the things they did to have fun.

One day I found the book before this one, Maida’s Little Shop, on Project Gutenberg.  I was glad to read it, because it gave me background information that I hadn’t had before.

There’re a lot more books in the series, but I’ve only read three total. I’m hoping to find more of them somewhere!

H is for Hale

Another “girly” book writer, Shannon Hale is also one of my favorite authors. Her books aren’t just for girls though – my brother is just as eager as I am to read her new books when they come out.

Princess Academy

The first Shannon Hale book that I read, it’s also one of my favorites. The sequel, Princess Academy: Palace of Stone came out not too long ago. I bought it immediately and read it as quickly as possible – it did not disappoint!

The Goose Girl (Books of Bayern)

Colter and I love this series. We don’t have it, but every year or so we get it from the library and re-read it.  There are three more in the Bayern series: Enna BurningRiver Secrets, and Forest Born. We can’t decide which one we like best, they’re all so good! We actually named one of our baby goats Bayern one year, and Colter and I were the only ones who knew what it meant. 😀

I’ve also read Austenland, which was very enjoyable. I can’t wait to see what Shannon’s going to release next!

G is for George

I picked up Princess Of The Midnight Ball one day at my library and have since read all of Jessica’s books. Jessica Day George is an amazing author and I can’t wait for her next book, Wednesdays At The Castle, to come out.

Princess of the Midnight Ball

A new take on the Twelve Dancing Princesses, this book made me fall in love with princess stories all over again. The sequels, Princess of Glass and Princess of the Silver Woods were just as enjoyable.

Dragon Slippers

I love Creel because she’s one of those heroines who doesn’t let the hero take care of everything – she does it herself. And I love these books because, there’re dragons. Dragons are awesome! (The sequels Dragon Flight and Dragon Spear are awesome too.)

Tuesdays at the Castle

Celie is the only one who understands Castle Glower, and when her family goes missing she’s the only one who can find them. Another story where the girl is the hero. 🙂 The sequel to this is coming out in a month, and I’m excited!

Learning To Drive Stick Shift

I was cleaning up the breakroom after dinner one night when Dad came in and told me to hurry.  “If you get that done soon enough, we’ll go out in the field and you can practice driving stick shift.” We’d brought the old truck up to Scottsburg months ago for that, but the field had been too wet every time we checked. “It’s supposed to rain tomorrow, so this might be the last time the field is dry enough for a while.”

Jade and Indigo still had dishes to do, but I was done with everything I needed to do. I ran to find Dad and told him “I’m done!”
We went out to the truck and he got in the drivers side. “I’ll drive it out there and you can watch me.” We drove around the front of the building and then went to the higher ground behind it.
“The ground’s not too bad here – if we stay in this high spot, we should be fine. Here’s how this works.”
He explained how to drive with the clutch, and then we switched spots. “Um, tell me how to do this again?” He told me again and I tried to push the clutch all the way down. My foot couldn’t reach that far. I sighed and started feeling around for the lever that moves the seat forward. Dad showed me where it was, and we spent a couple of minutes trying to adjust it properly.
After I’d been driving around for a couple of minutes, stopping and starting (and only stalling twice!), Dad said “Okay, let’s try to go in reverse.”
Now, the truck is very old. It’s older than I am. And the only reason we still have it is so the kids can learn to drive stick shift in our field. So we haven’t taken care of a couple of things – the passenger side mirror is completely gone, and the driver’s side mirror is cracked. Which isn’t a problem when you’re just driving around in a field.
But remember how we needed to stay on the high ground? Right behind me was a slope, leading down to some of the lowest ground in the field. So I was looking all around, trying to see where the slope was. I eventually gave up and decided that I was just going to go for it. It took me a couple of times – I kept stalling because I didn’t want to give it so much gas that we sped right into the low ground.
When I finally got it right, the car wouldn’t move. It wouldn’t move and it wouldn’t move. “Try rocking the car.” Dad showed me how to rock the car and when that didn’t work, we hopped out to see what was wrong.
The tires were sunk three inches deep in mud.
My brothers cam out from the barn and started laughing. “Look – Brett got the truck stuck!”
“It wasn’t my fault – Dad said so. Right, Dad?”
“It wasn’t Brett’s fault. Can you go get me boards?”
The boys dropped off the boards and ran, hoping that Dad wouldn’t send them for more. Thankfully, they’d brought enough for the tire. We jacked it up and put boards under it. But then the other back tire had sunk too much. So Dad called them back and made them get more boards.
Once we had boards under both of them, we tried to move the truck. But the front tires had been standing there for too long – they were sunk in about two inches. The back of the truck moved slightly, but just enough to slide sideways off of the boards.
So I went to get boards for the front of the truck, groaning as I picked them up.
As I walked through the pasture I realized that I’d chosen the path that went right through the freshest straw from the barn. That was great – not only was I having to carry these dirty boards, I was having to walk through a lot of goat poop too!

Thankfully, the boys were done with their jobs and had come back, so they got to carry the rest of the boards. Dad put them under the front tires and told the boys to get in the back of the truck to weigh it down. I hopped into the passenger seat and prayed.
After a couple of agonizing seconds, the truck started moving. Dad gunned it and we went barreling across the field, heading for the fire department. Their parking lot wasn’t far from where we’d been stuck. I let out a cheer when the tires hit pavement – I was so glad it was over! I wanted to go home, and everyone was waiting on us.
So – that is the story of how I managed to get stuck on my first time driving a stick shift.

F is for Foster

As a homeschooled kid, I love books that teach me things without being a schoolbook. These are all history books, but they’re a bit different than your average history book. Most history books take one person, or one event, and highlight that. With this set, you explore what was happening in the whole world during someone’s life.

“Considered the innovator of “horizontal history,” Genevieve Foster became frustrated when her two school-aged children complained about the boring presentation of history in their school texts. This frustration led to Foster’s first book, George Washington’s World (1941). In her unique approach, Foster weaves a story of the world around her central character; rather than focusing exclusively on geo-political events, as most textbooks do; she includes stories of scientific discovery and invention, music, literature, art, and religion. She has a keen intuition for stories that will especially delight and amuse her youthful audience.” (Taken from this page.)

The World of Captain John Smith

This is me trying to fill in space so the pictures and text will stay in place. It seems to be working, so I’ll keep rambling and hope that it is enough to lower the text below this. I need one more line of text, so I’m going to type some more and hope it works.

These books are my favorite way to learn history! I wish she would write more of them. And when I have kids, I’m definitely getting these for them!

E is for Eragon

I know that some people don’t like the Eragon books, but my siblings and I love them. We’ve been fans since one of my Dad’s best friends gave us Eragon about 6 years ago, and we eagerly awaited the other three. There was a lot of groaning about the fact that Christopher Paolini took three years to write Inheritance. 😀 My siblings and I are constantly playing games that involve the Eragon books. I’ve been cast as Arya many times, and had lots of fun in that role. 🙂 We’re currently naming places around our new property, and the boys are trying to name something, anything, Tronjheim or Ellesmera. Or really, any name that is from these books.

Colter and I have had many debates with our cousin as to whether or not Christopher Paolini could write more Eragon books. Trevor doesn’t think so, and Colter and I think he could. What do you think?

D is for Dahl

When I was thinking up the authors I wanted to feature, Roald Dahl was one of the first that came to mind. His children’s books are so good!

The Charlie Set

Everyone has heard of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, but not as many people know about the sequel, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator. They are both great books that everyone should read.

Matilda

Matilda used to be my favorite – a little girl who loved reading as much as I did! Thankfully I have better parents than her. 🙂

The BFG

When I was younger I had several dreams where I got to meet the BFG. They were awesome. 😀

Roald Dahl Phizz-Whizzing Collection

I haven’t read all of the books in this set, but I’m sure they’re all wonderful! I might have to add them to my TBR list…

C is for Cleary

One of my favorite children’s authors is Beverly Cleary.  She’s a great writer!

The Complete Ramona Collection

Indigo is currently reading these, and I’m glad to report that she’s loving them as much as I did! It’s hard to not love Ramona.

The Ralph Mouse Collection

I made my brother read the Ralph Mouse books when he first learned to read, and he loved them. That’s when he realized my book recommendations could be trusted. 😀

The World of Beverly Cleary Collection

All of the books in this set are great – this set also has the Henry books, which I forgot to mention. (Oops!)

B is for Boston

Some of my favorite books are the Green Knowe books, written by L.M Boston.
I read these books as a child, loved them, and haven’t read them since. (I’m thinking about getting them for one of my brothers.) From what I remember, it’s a very magical read that drew me in.

The Children of Green Knowe

Treasure of Green Knowe

The River at Green Knowe

A Stranger at Green Knowe

An Enemy at Green Knowe

A is for Alcott

Without further ado – my favorite Louisa May Alcott books.

Little Women Series

Little Woman was probably the first classic I’ve ever read. I loved it! Little Men and Jo’s Boys are also some of my favorite books.

An Old-Fashioned Girl

I’ve always kinda pictured myself as Polly, and Outward Bound just reinforced that image. 😀

Eight Cousins and Rose in Bloom

A girl surrounded by lots of boys. So basically, my family. Except Rose’s cousins are much cooler than my brothers. 😀

What’s Happening

I have a lot on my plate for April.

  1. I have to keep up with my normal life. The business, eating, sleep… that all has to happen.
  2. I’m attempting to get 20k words on my current WIP with April’s Camp NaNoWriMo. I’ve written about NaNoWriMo before, if you don’t know what that is. 🙂
  3. I’m also attempting the A to Z Blog Challenge.

This is what the creator has to say about the challenge:

“It all began with my post from Saturday March 27, 2010 when I set forth a challenge to all bloggers for the month of April.   Can you post every day except Sundays during this month?  And to up the bar, can you blog thematically from A to Z?

“Most of the time if you subtract Sundays from April, you then have 26 days–one day for each letter of the alphabet.  When April 1st lands on a Sunday you begin on that day which will be the only Sunday you would post during that month’s challenge.

“Using this premise, you would start beginning April First with a topic themed on something with the letter A, then on April second another topic with the letter B as the theme, and so on until you finish on April thirtieth with the theme based on the letter Z.  It doesn’t even have to be a word–it can be a proper noun, the letter used as a symbol, or the letter itself.  The theme of the day is the letter scheduled for that day.”

For my posts, I’m going to highlight some of my favorite books, using the author’s last name. If I can’t come up with an author whose name begins with a certain letter, I’ll probably find a book that starts with that letter. 🙂

I’m also going to see if I can make each post approximately 100 words. I don’t know how that will go – I’ve never tried to do a word limit before.

Hopefully I’ll be able to keep up with it all!

All of a sudden it hit me – they were clean! They’d all brushed their hair, they were wearing clean clothes, and they actually looked human, and not like the wild animals we’d become. 🙂

I sat down next to Bobby and helped myself to lunch. We were having tortillas with peanut butter and jelly, and I was starving!

While I was eating, I looked up at Bobby. “Why are you staring at me?”

“Because you look… different.”

I laughed. “Different? I washed my hair and put on regular clothes. I can’t look too different.”

“Well, you do. Really. Are you wearing makeup?”

“Nope. The other girls are though. Wait until they come out here – they’re covered in it. I don’t like makeup, and I don’t know how they can do it!”

The other girls came out not long after that and we finished lunch.

Then we went to a platform that had a whole bunch of mats. We were each handed a form to fill out, rating how our instructors did and how our experience was. It started raining not long after we got there, so we stayed there for a while. The mats were really comfortable, and most of us took naps.

“Okay, it’s time to go! Wake each other up!”

It looked like losing a baby seal wasn’t the best thing. “Yeah, we did. We have no idea where it went.”

She went back to inventorying, and I went back to cleaning.

A couple of hours later, we were done. We filed into the building that we were working next to and everyone started grinning – our duffel bags were in there! They were locked in a storage unit, all of them piled on top of each other.

“That’s mine!”

“I see mine! It’s all the way in the back there.”

“I don’t see mine – it must be buried under all of yours. I hope it didn’t crush my  pretzels!”

“Okay kids, here’s how this works. You’re all going to get the things you need out of your duffel bags. Please do not touch your electronics, food or anything else. Just get your clothes and toiletries. Got it?” Maggie looked at each of us, making sure we understood.

“Got it.”

Maggie unlocked the door and we all surged forward to grab our bags. “Only a couple of you at a time – don’t push!”

I grabbed my duffel and moved out of the way. I grabbed my things, zipping my duffel back up and bringing it back to the cage they kept them in.

When everyone was ready, we headed for the building where the showers were.

“Listen everyone – the hot water here is limited, and there are several other crews that also have to shower. So please, be considerate.”

There were only four stalls, and six girls, so we “called” showers. I got fifth shower.

When I finally got into the shower, it was so amazing. I can’t even describe how amazing it felt. I was able to shave, wash my hair and face, and it was HOT water. Do you know how amazing that it?? It felt like heaven right then.

Despite being the fifth girl in, I was the third out. I got dressed in my clean clothes and put on clean socks, grinning as I put my feet into my sneakers.

I brushed my teeth and retainers, praising God for running water as I did so. I combed out my hair and then left the bathroom with my pile of dirty things, bringing them back to my duffel bag.

When I came back out of the building the duffel bags were in, I walked over to join the guys, Jen, and Katie. They were eating lunch, and I was starving!

The closer I got, the weirder everyone looked. I finally stopped and stared at the guys – why did they look so different?

Outward Bound – Day Thirteen, Part Seven

This entry is part 186 of 209 in the series Outward Bound

We turned onto a road that went slightly uphill, past the buildings where the instructors live when they’re not on a course.

“Look! There’re chickens there! There’s some Barred Rocks, there’s a Rhode Island Red, and that one looks like it’s a Buff Orpington.”

My crewmates were looking at me like I had three heads. “What? I’m a farm girl! We’ve had all three of those breeds before.”

I hate chickens, but it was good to see something that reminded me of home. We’ve had chickens on and off since I was a little girl, and one day I was in the pen with them. We had a couple of roosters back then, and one of them was mean. Well, he flew up into my face and pecked me, and ever since then I’ve hated chickens. We got rid of that rooster not long after that. LOL

We turned off the road and dropped our packs in a clearing surrounded by buildings. The crew stood around awkwardly, waiting for the next thing.

“Okay, crew, this is Maggie. She’s going to help you guys. Listen to her, okay?”

Everyone looked at Maggie. “Okay, here’s what we’re going to do.”

She assigned everyone a cleaning job. Some of us had to clean the black foam mats, some of us had to clean the food stuffs, and some of us had to clean the ducky suits.

There were more things to clean, but I don’t remember everything.

The radio was playing and we were all singing along as we got the work done. We had motivation – as soon as we were done, we were going to be able to shower!

It was probably around one or two when we finished. Maggie walked around inventorying everything we returned, trying to figure out what we were missing. We were going to have to pay for anything that had been lost.

“If it helps you, Maggie, we lost a small baby seal and several strands of para-cord. I know that.”

She winced. “You guys lost a baby seal?”

“Colter, a big wimp? No, he was great. He should have been Leader of the Day every day. He was the only one who could get us all to do what we needed to do.”

“Really? That’s interesting.”

“Yeah. He talked about you some – he was always wondering how you were doing.”

I grinned as we continued to stomp down the trail. Alex and I walked the rest of the PCE together, talking the whole way. I asked him all sorts of questions about how Colter’s course had been, and about Colter. I knew that this was the best time to talk to one of his crewmates, because there wasn’t really going to be another opportunity.

As we neared the finish line, Alex asked me “Do you want to run to the finish line?”

I could tell that he wanted to, so I nodded my head and told him to go for it. He took off and I followed him, at a much slower speed.

We crossed the finish line, joining our crewmates as they cheered for us. I went to find my water bottle and got a drink, grabbing a slice of watermelon as I rejoined my crewmates.

I looked down at my watch as I munched on the watermelon. I had made my goal, with time to spare! Instead of two and a half hours, I’d done it in 2:07. 😀

“Okay, my crew, come here!”

Katie and Jen were standing by our water bottles, calling for us to come over.

“We’ve got a tight schedule, so let’s get cracking. We’ve got to get our stuff done so we can shower! We’re going to go back to the platform and get our stuff so we can De-Issue.”

We arrived at the platform and started sorting. All of our personal stuff stayed there, along with our sleeping bags and eating materials. We loaded the rest of the stuff back into the backpacks and set off, heading back the same way we’d just come.
